Preschool is where early literacy and number sense begin, and where we are most careful not to rush.
Children at this age can learn to decode words and count accurately well before they can think about what they are reading or why a number behaves the way it does. We teach both together, so the skill and the understanding arrive at the same time.

What the day is made of
Project work
A question the class is investigating over several weeks, pulling in reading, counting, drawing, and building as the investigation needs them.
Early literacy
Letter sounds, blending, and sight words taught explicitly and practised daily, alongside a great deal of being read to.
Number sense
Counting, sorting, comparing, and pattern-making with physical materials before any of it appears on paper.
Art, music, and movement
Timetabled, not squeezed in. These are where many children first discover they are good at something.

What children can usually do when they leave this level
Children develop at different rates. These are the markers we watch for, not a checklist every child must hit on the same day.
- Reads simple decodable text with growing fluency
- Writes their name and short words independently
- Counts, compares, and combines numbers within twenty
- Explains their thinking to a classmate
- Sees a task through from plan to finish
