Playgroup is usually a child's first regular time away from their parents, and we treat that as the main event rather than a formality.
The work of this year is learning that school is safe, that a teacher can be trusted, and that other children are interesting. Everything else follows from those three.

What this level is for
Play
Open-ended materials and room to use them. At this age play is not the reward for working — it is the work.
Learn
Language, routines and early problem solving, picked up through doing rather than through instruction.
Grow
Confidence away from a parent, and the first friendships a child makes for themselves.

What the day is made of
Free play and exploration
Open-ended materials — blocks, water, sand, dough — with adults nearby to name what children are doing rather than direct it.
Circle time
Songs, movement, and picture books. Short, repetitive, and predictable, which is what builds language at this age.
Gross-motor play
Climbing, running, and balancing outdoors every session. Physical confidence at this age carries into everything else.
Routines and self-care
Washing hands, packing away, choosing a snack. Small independences, practised until they are automatic.

What children can usually do when they leave this level
Children develop at different rates. These are the markers we watch for, not a checklist every child must hit on the same day.
- Separates from a parent without distress
- Follows a simple two-step instruction
- Plays alongside and then with other children
- Uses words to ask for help
- Handles a book, a crayon, and a cup with growing control
